Can Trucking Employees Use Employer-Sponsored Mental Health Benefits?

Drivers, dispatchers and warehouse teams at many fleets have therapy benefits they never use. Here’s who usually qualifies, how to check, and how to start with Proactive Wellness.

Yes. Many trucking, logistics and private-fleet employers offer free, confidential therapy sessions through a mental health benefit such as Spring Health, Lyra Health or a traditional Employee Assistance Program (EAP). Company drivers, dispatchers, warehouse staff, mechanics and managers usually qualify, and many plans include spouses and dependents. Independent contractors and drivers employed by third-party carriers usually have separate benefits.

Article summary

  • Company drivers, dispatchers, warehouse staff and managers often have therapy benefits.
  • Owner-operators and drivers for separate carriers or bottlers usually have different benefits.
  • Check your benefits portal or HR, then complete our intake. Our office coordinates eligibility.
  • Spring Health doesn’t require you to find us in its directory first.

Who usually qualifies

  • Company drivers employed directly by the fleet or shipper
  • Dispatchers, driver managers and safety staff
  • Warehouse, yard and maintenance employees
  • Supervisors, terminal managers and leaders
  • Spouses and dependents, depending on the employer’s plan

Usually not covered by the fleet’s employee benefits:

  • Owner-operators and independent contractors
  • Drivers employed by a separate carrier, bottler or staffing agency, even if they haul for a well-known brand

Many plans include spouses and dependents.

Transportation employers that offer Spring Health

Spring Health lists J.B. Hunt, Target, The Coca-Cola Company, Wawa and General Mills among its customers, and has published a case study with CarMax (Spring Health customers, checked October 2026). These companies run large fleets, distribution centers or logistics operations with employees in New York, New Jersey, Georgia and Massachusetts.

Your eligibility depends on your actual employer. Many Coca-Cola and Pepsi drivers, for example, work for independent bottling companies with their own benefits, and dedicated-fleet drivers may be employed by a carrier rather than the retailer. Check your own benefits materials.

How to check your benefit

  1. Look in your benefits portal or handbook for “Spring Health,” “Lyra,” “Revive,” “BHS,” “EAP” or “mental health.”
  2. Ask HR or your benefits contact whether family members are covered and whether there’s an activation step.
  3. Complete our intake form. Tell us your employer and the program you think you have. Don’t include health details in email.
  4. Let our office coordinate. For Spring Health, we work with Care Navigation to confirm eligibility and add you to our caseload. For Lyra, we can verify an active account and schedule. For BHS/Revive, we coordinate through our provider relationship.
  5. Schedule your first session once eligibility and any authorization are confirmed.

What therapy can help with

Sessions at Proactive Wellness are practical, confidential and held by secure video for people located in New York, New Jersey, Georgia or Massachusetts. Common reasons trucking employees reach out include:

  • Burnout, stress and irritability, often treated with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), which the American Psychological Association’s depression guideline recommends for adults (APA)
  • Sleep problems from irregular schedules, where CBT for insomnia is the recommended first treatment (ACP 2016)
  • Relationship strain from time away, through individual or couples sessions
  • Drinking or other substance use, using motivational interviewing (SAMHSA TIP 35)
  • Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) for staying grounded in what matters to you when stress you can’t control stays high. In workplace studies, ACT-based programs reduced psychological distress, especially for people who started out highly stressed (Reeve et al., 2018).

Therapy benefits and DOT SAP evaluations are different

A mental health benefit covers voluntary, confidential therapy. A DOT Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) evaluation after a drug or alcohol violation is a federally required process with reports to your employer, and it isn’t automatically covered by Spring Health, Lyra or an EAP. Frequently asked questions

Does my employer find out if I use the benefit?

Employers usually see only general usage numbers, not who used the benefit or why. Voluntary therapy with us is confidential, and we don’t share clinical details without your written permission, except where the law requires it.

Can my spouse or kids use my benefit?

Often, yes, but it depends on your employer’s plan. We’ll check before scheduling.

Do I need to find Proactive Wellness in the Spring Health directory?

No. Complete our intake and our office works with Spring Health Care Navigation to confirm eligibility and add you to our caseload.

I’m an owner-operator. What are my options?

Fleet employee benefits usually don’t cover independent contractors. You can use private pay, or check whether your health plan covers therapy.

Can I use the benefit for a DOT SAP evaluation?

Don’t assume so. SAP payment arrangements vary by employer and must be confirmed for your situation.

What if my benefit runs out?

We’ll talk with you about options, such as health insurance or private pay, before your covered sessions end.

Check your EAP eligibility

Proactive Wellness participates with Spring Health, Lyra Health and BHS/Revive. Complete our intake form first. Our office reviews it, coordinates eligibility and any authorization with your program, and then schedules your first session.

Have Spring Health through work? You don’t need to find us in the Spring Health directory first. After you complete our intake, our office works with Spring Health Care Navigation to confirm eligibility and add you to our caseload.

Eligibility and family coverage vary by employer, so coverage isn’t confirmed until we verify it. Therapy is by secure video for people located in New York, New Jersey, Georgia or Massachusetts. Please don’t send health details by email or in comments.

Need a DOT SAP evaluation?

DOT SAP evaluations are separate from EAP therapy. Start our SAP intake and we’ll explain the process and payment options. Employer or EAP payment is not guaranteed.
