Manufacturing and Warehouse Worker Stress: When Physical Work Takes an Emotional Toll

Long shifts, production targets and financial pressure affect warehouse and manufacturing workers’ mental health. Learn the signs, what helps, and how to use EAP benefits.

Stress in manufacturing and warehouse jobs often comes from a mix of physical fatigue, rotating or overnight shifts, production targets and money worries, and it can wear on your mood, sleep and relationships long before you name it. You don’t have to push through alone. Many employers offer free, confidential counseling through an Employee Assistance Program (EAP), and therapy can help you cope with the parts of the job you can’t change.

Article summary

  • Physical fatigue, rotating shifts, production targets and money worries all wear on mood and sleep.
  • New hires, operators, shift leads and plant leaders each face different pressures.
  • CBT, CBT for insomnia and motivational interviewing are well-supported options.
  • Chobani’s 2025 benefits guide lists an EAP administered by BHS. Drivers needing a DOT SAP evaluation have a separate path.

The invisible side of physical work

A hard shift on the line or the warehouse floor can leave little energy for your kids, your partner or yourself. Rotating schedules disrupt sleep and meals. Rate targets, scanners that track every minute, and safety concerns keep your body on alert. If your household depends on overtime, taking a day off for your health can feel impossible.

Signs that stress is building:

  • Feeling exhausted even after a day off
  • Snapping at family, or feeling flat and checked out at home
  • Trouble sleeping after night or swing shifts
  • Worrying about injuries, layoffs or making rate
  • Drinking more, or using energy drinks or other substances to keep going

If your household depends on overtime, taking a day off for your health can feel impossible.

Stress across the workforce

New hires and temp workers adjust to a fast pace, unfamiliar equipment and uncertainty about whether the job will last.

Experienced operators and material handlers may live with aches, injuries and worry about how long their bodies can keep up.

Shift leads and supervisors are caught between production goals from above and the real needs of the people on their team.

Plant managers and leadership carry responsibility for safety, staffing and output, often with long hours of their own.

Drivers and distribution staff add road time, delivery windows and federal safety rules to the mix. If you hold a CDL and are subject to DOT drug and alcohol testing, that comes with its own set of rules (more on that below).

Effects at home

When one adult works nights and another works days, a household can feel like two separate lives. Kids may only see a tired parent. Money stress can turn small disagreements into big ones. Talking openly, and sometimes getting help as a couple or family, can ease that strain.

Practical steps you can try this week

  1. Track your patterns. For two weeks, note your sleep, mood and energy before and after shifts.
  2. Protect recovery time. A predictable wind-down after work helps your body come off alert.
  3. Raise safety and workload concerns through your supervisor, safety committee or union steward.
  4. Talk to someone you trust instead of carrying it alone.

Production targets, staffing and schedules are set by management. If stress lasts more than two weeks or affects safety, sleep or relationships, get a professional evaluation.

Evidence-based approaches

Therapy at Proactive Wellness is practical and confidential, by secure video around nights, weekends and rotating shifts.

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for anxiety, low mood and anger, recommended in the American Psychological Association’s depression guideline (APA).
  • CBT for insomnia (CBT-I), the first recommended treatment for chronic sleep problems, including for shift workers (ACP 2016).
  • Motivational interviewing for drinking or other substance use, without judgment (SAMHSA TIP 35).
  • Solution-focused sessions for planning around a demanding schedule and making decisions about money, family and your job.

Chobani employees: check your EAP

Chobani’s 2025 benefits guide describes an Employee Assistance Program administered by BHS, available to employees and their household members (One Chobani 2025 benefits guide, checked October 2026). Benefits can change each year, so check your current guide. If you’re located in New York, New Jersey, Georgia or Massachusetts, contact Proactive Wellness and we’ll help verify whether you can use your EAP with us.

Other manufacturers and distribution companies use other EAPs. Look for the name in your benefits portal or ask HR. Proactive Wellness participates with BHS/Revive, Lyra Health and Spring Health. See our EAP benefits page.

Drivers: EAP therapy and DOT SAP evaluations are different

If you drive a commercial vehicle and have a DOT drug or alcohol violation, you need a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) evaluation before you can return to safety-sensitive duty. That’s a separate process from EAP therapy, with its own federal rules, reports and payment. Proactive Wellness provides both. Read about FMCSA SAP evaluations, and don’t assume your EAP pays for a SAP evaluation.

Frequently asked questions

Can hourly or part-time workers use an EAP?

Often, yes, but it depends on your employer and your employment classification. Chobani’s 2025 guide, for example, lists its EAP for employees and household members. We’ll check your eligibility.

Can I find a therapist who understands shift work?

Yes. Tell us about your schedule during intake. Virtual sessions can make it easier to fit therapy around nights, weekends and rotating shifts.

Does my EAP cover my spouse or kids?

Some EAPs include household members. We verify your current benefit instead of assuming.

Is a DOT SAP evaluation the same as therapy?

No. A SAP evaluation follows federal DOT rules, includes reports to your employer, and is not automatically covered by a counseling benefit. Contact us separately to start a SAP intake.

Where do I have to be for virtual sessions?

You need to be physically located in New York, New Jersey, Georgia or Massachusetts during each session.

Check your EAP eligibility

Proactive Wellness participates with Spring Health, Lyra Health and BHS/Revive. Complete our intake form first. Our office reviews it, coordinates eligibility and any authorization with your program, and then schedules your first session.

Eligibility and family coverage vary by employer, so coverage isn’t confirmed until we verify it. Therapy is by secure video for people located in New York, New Jersey, Georgia or Massachusetts. Please don’t send health details by email or in comments.

New to EAP benefits? Read how to check your Revive (BHS) eligibility.

Need a DOT SAP evaluation?

DOT SAP evaluations are separate from EAP therapy. Start our SAP intake and we’ll explain the process and payment options. Employer or EAP payment is not guaranteed.
