Knowing what to expect makes the SAP evaluation much less stressful. It’s a professional clinical conversation, not a test you pass or fail.
What the SAP is trying to learn
The SAP’s job is to understand what led to the violation and decide what education or treatment you need before returning to safety-sensitive work. The evaluation is a clinical assessment under 49 CFR Part 40.
Topics you can expect
- The test and circumstances of the violation
- Your history of alcohol and drug use
- Your physical and mental health, as it relates to substance use
- Work, family and other stressors
- Any past treatment or prior violations
Answer honestly. The recommendation is based on what you share, and inconsistencies can lead to a more intensive plan.
What to bring
- Photo ID
- Any paperwork about the violation, including the MRO or employer notice
- Your employer’s DER or C/TPA contact, if you have one
- CDL drivers: your Clearinghouse login, if you’ve registered
What happens after
- Your SAP writes a report with recommendations for education, treatment or both
- The report goes to your employer, or to you if you’re unemployed
- You start the recommended program
- You return to the same SAP for a follow-up evaluation when you finish
What a SAP can’t do
- Guarantee your job or license
- Skip or shorten required steps
- Change a recommendation because you ask for a lighter plan
