How Long Does the DOT SAP Process Take?

A realistic timeline for each DOT SAP step, from your first evaluation to return-to-duty testing, plus what speeds the process up and what slows it down.

The honest answer: it depends mostly on what your SAP recommends and how quickly you complete it. Here’s what each step usually involves, so you can plan.

The timeline, step by step

  • Choosing a SAP and intake: as fast as you act. Our appointments may be available within 24–48 hours after intake review and payment.
  • Initial evaluation: one face-to-face session, in person or by secure video. Your report follows.
  • Education or treatment: the longest and most variable step. An education course may take days or weeks; a treatment program can take longer.
  • Follow-up evaluation: scheduled once your provider confirms you’ve finished.
  • Return-to-duty test: arranged by your employer, or by your C/TPA if you’re a CDL driver without one, once the follow-up report is in.
  • Follow-up testing: continues after you’re back at work, for at least 12 months and up to five years.

What speeds it up

  • Contacting a SAP the same week as your violation
  • Having your paperwork and employer contact ready
  • CDL drivers: designating your SAP in the Clearinghouse right away
  • Starting your recommended program promptly and attending every session
  • Keeping your SAP updated on your progress

What slows it down

  • Waiting to schedule the first evaluation
  • Missing sessions or switching programs without telling your SAP
  • Not having an employer or C/TPA ready to direct the return-to-duty test
  • Owner-operators without a C/TPA

Beware of guaranteed timelines

No qualified SAP can promise you’ll finish by a certain date, because the SAP doesn’t know your recommendation until after the evaluation. Offers to complete everything in 24 hours aren’t compliant with DOT rules.

Frequently asked questions

Can I finish the whole process in one day?

No. The initial evaluation, education or treatment, follow-up evaluation and return-to-duty test must happen in order.

How long is follow-up testing?

At least six unannounced tests in your first 12 months back, and up to five years as your SAP directs.

Does a CDL downgrade make it take longer?

The SAP steps are the same, but your state may have its own reinstatement process once your status changes.
