Yes. DOT rules allow both the initial and follow-up SAP evaluations to be done remotely by live video, at the SAP’s discretion and when the SAP’s license permits it.
What DOT requires for a virtual evaluation
Under 49 CFR §40.291, a remote evaluation must still be face to face. The technology must:
- Allow real-time audio and video between you and the SAP
- Be clear enough for the SAP to gather the same information as in person
- Protect your confidentiality at industry standards
A phone call, a text chat or an online questionnaire does not count as a SAP evaluation.
Licensing: where you are matters
The SAP must be licensed where you’re physically located during the session. Proactive Wellness provides virtual SAP evaluations to clients located in New York, New Jersey, Georgia and Massachusetts.

Can I do it from my truck?
